The history of VCP began in 1988, when Votorantim, together with BNDES, acquired the “Celpav” (Celulose e Papel Votorantim) Project, from the former Companhia Guatapará de Papel e Celulose. Thus, an integrated paper and cellulose factory was implemented in the town of Luiz Antonio, in the Ribeirão Preto region (interior of the state of São Paulo).

In 1992, Grupo Votorantim made another major acquisition: Papel Simão S.A.. With that business, the productive capacity jumped to 220,000 tons of cellulose and 250,000 tons of paper annually, in four factories in addition to a distributor: KSR.

With its growing production capacity, Votorantim consolidates Celpav and the factories acquired from the Simão group, in 1995, into a single holding company: VCP (Votorantim Celulose e Papel), which is founded as the third largest Brazilian company in the sector.

In 2004, VCP extended its area of activity and invested in Rio Grande do Sul. The company VCP Extremo Sul was born from the purchase of an area of 63,000 hectares, of which 11,000 immediately received the first Eucalyptus seedlings. In the following year, the company announced the beginning of the process of socio-environmental licensing for the implementation of a factory to manufacture bleached cellulose from Eucalyptus in Rio Grande do Sul. It was the introduction of the “Rhombus Project” (Projeto Losango), which prescribes investments of US$1.3 billion in that state.

Another important fact that marks the history of VCP was the signing of a contract in 2006 for the exchange of assets with International Paper (IP). VCP received assets from IP regarding a cellulose plant in construction, with all rights related, in the amount of US$ 1.15 billion, in addition to lands and planted forests located in the vicinity of Três Lagoas (MS). With this business, the company created the “Horizon Project” (Projeto Horizonte), which prescribes the construction of a cellulose factory with investments of around R$ 3 billion.
