The pulp and paper sector in Brazil includes 220 companies, employing 110,000 people, with about 500,000 direct jobs, according to the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association (Bracelpa). Worldwide, there are 7.638 paper mils and 4,003 pulp mills, employing about 2.4 million people and producing 382 million tons of paper and 193 million tons of pulp in 2007, according to estimates by the RISI.

In 2007 Brazilian pulp production rose by 6.3%, to 11.9 million tons, making it the sixth largest producer in the world and the leader in production of eucalyptus pulp. Paper production reached 9.0 million tons, up 3.4% year on year, being the 12th ranked company in global volume.

Revenue totaled about R$ 24 billion, paying R$ 2.1 billion in taxes. Exports totaled S$4.7 billion (FOB), 16.1% on 2006.

The forest planted area totals 5.5 million hectares in Brazil, with 1.7 million grown by the companies in the sector, who set aside 2.8 million hectares of native forest and legal reserves. The sector is internationally certified for 1.4 million hectares of forest, attesting to the fact that they are correctly managed and comply with environmental protection and biodiversity norms. Furthermore, the industry maintains agreements on wood production with about 10,000 small and medium-sized rural producers, who today represent a total area of 304,000 hectares in Brazil.
