Votorantim Celulose e Papel S.A. – VCP is one of Brazil’s largest producers of pulp and paper, with net revenues of R$ 2.487 billion in 2008, total assets of R$ 11,464 billion and net loss of R$ 1,312 million.
It produces bleached eucalyptus pulp (market pulp), specialty paper and printing and writing paper traded under the brands Copimax and Maxcote (cut-size), Starmax and Image (coated), Printmax and Top Print (offset) Easycopy, Extracopy and Slipcopy (carbonless), Termocopy, Termolabel, Termoscript, Termoticket, Termoloto and Termobank (thermals). Of the 1,592 tons ((1,201,000 tons of pulp and 391,000 tons of paper) sold in 2008, 60% was exported to over 50 countries on five continents.
Its integrated process – from the planted forests to industrial processing, trading and distribution of products – uses state-of-the-art technology in each stage, assuring greater productive efficiency.
Wood production is also done in partnership with rural producers through forest fostering programs. A private limited company, its controlling stock holder is the Votorantim Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in Latin America.
Its stocks are traded on the stock markets in São Paulo and Nova York. In São Paulo it has been rated as Level 1 in Corporate Governance since 2001 and has been part of the Business Sustainability Index (ISE) since 2005. In September 2008 VCP was welcomed onto the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) alongside the leading global companies committed to the balance between economic, social and environmental issues.
VCP’s mills are located in the State of São Paulo, in Jacareí (market pulp), Piracicaba (specialty papers) and with the participation of 50% Conpacel consortium in the city of Americana, as well as one mill located in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Três Lagoas (market pulp).
VCP operates: a port terminal in Santos (SP), a corporate office in São Paulo (SP), three pulp sales offices abroad - Zug (Switzerland), Baltimore (USA) and Shanghai (China), a Distribution Center in Campinas (SP), which began to operate in the second semester of 2008 and 19 KSR paper distributor subsidiaries.
The forest base consists of 596,000 hectares, of which 344,000 are planted, i.e. with a preserved area which is above the legal minimum size, distributed between the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul. At the end of 2008, it generated 7,742 direct jobs in these regions, with 2,904 employed and 4,838 subcontractors employed.
VCP’s aim in terms of sustainability is to be seen as a company which balances out the creation of commercial, environmental and social value. This aim is based on the constant commitment and involvement of its public groups, thereby reducing the business risk and expanding opportunities in corporate responsibility.

The concept of eco-efficiency – to produce more with less input and the use of cleaner technologies – is followed painstakingly throughout the Company with the common aim of basing production on renewable sources. For this reason, VCP was the first Brazilian company to become a signatory to the International Clean Production Declaration of the United Nations Program for the Environment in 2005.
In the first quarter of 2009, VCP acquired the control of Aracruz Celulose SA, of which the Company had already owned 28% of the voting shares, in line with its strategy to assume the position of largest producer of pulp in the world. Therefore, the combined production capacity of the two companies will reach 5.8 million tons annually, with participation estimated at 12% of global market pulp.
